Manila has undergone foreign rule for centuries and foreign culture persistently invades it to this day. No wonder it is a melting pot in the tropics. Visitors catch the Manila mania so easily. Overpopulated, warm and bursting at the seams with activity, Manila has vestiges of the past in the cobblestoned streets of the Walled City of Intramuros, antiquated Antillean houses, mosques, temples, churches and chapels. To ride Manila style is to ride the jeepney (originally military jeeps), and in Makati there are now modern jeepneys running on electricity instead of petrol. The outdoor markets are still considered shopping destinations, but the presence of so many modern malls has pulled the crowds away from its plazas, parks and the bayside, into the air-conditioned comfort of the malls. It is in step with the rest of the world, with access to almost a hundred cable channels, wifi spots on every corner, mass rail system and IMAX cinetheques.
